Beginner wallet safety guide
1. Your seed phrase = your money
- The 12/24-word recovery phrase controls all funds in the wallet. Anyone who has it can take everything.
- Write it on paper (or metal). Never store it in screenshots, photos, cloud notes, email or chat.
- Keep two copies in separate safe places. Never type it into a website.
- No real support agent, exchange, or “wallet validator” will ever ask for it.
2. Never share private keys
- Private keys and seed phrases are never needed to receive crypto. Only your public address is.
- Use a hardware wallet for larger amounts; keep a small “hot” wallet for daily use.
- Before signing, read what you approve. “Unlimited approval” or “setApprovalForAll” can let a contract drain tokens. Review and revoke old approvals regularly.
3. Phishing signs
- Urgency: “your wallet will be closed”, “claim the airdrop in 10 minutes”.
- Look-alike domains (extra letters, different endings), sponsored search ads, links in DMs.
- Someone “helping” you in DMs after you post a question publicly.
- Fake giveaways: “send 1, get 2 back”. Always a scam.
- Address poisoning: tiny transfers from look-alike addresses. Always copy addresses from your own saved source and check the first and last characters.
4. Good habits
- Send a small test transaction first. Confirm the network matches on both sides.
- Bookmark the official sites you use. Keep apps and OS updated. Use 2FA (app-based, not SMS) on exchanges.
- If something sounds too good to be true, it is.
